>> Teaching employees basic literacy skills is definitely >> not the >> company's responsibility > >And why not? >If whoever wrote that (and I can guess but don't know)(and >many think it) also thinks that tax is theft and should be >minimised or abolished, then whose responsibility is it? hang on Russell, in NZ at least the companies ARE funding the training through their normal company tax, that is used to provide for the schools that are not providing the basic literacy skills. They shouldn't then need to set up their own school to teach new employees what they should have learnt at primary school. >Fire services were initially first funded wholly by >insurance companies and even now are a major contributor. Correct, and all fire insurance premiums (in NZ at least) have a dollop on top even now to fund the fire service (unless something has changed in the last 10 years). But that is different to having to teach the firemen attending your house fire how to fight it, which is the equivalent of what companies are having to do with literacy problems. -- http://www.piclist.com PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist
