If that's the only reason, have a look at the little demo I've attached. It turns out that the IR LED modulation frequency is close to values needed by bit rate generation for serial comms. The program I've attached uses an interrupt to modulate the LED and send and receive serial. I've created subroutines to replace PAUSE and SEROUT, and a function to replace SERIN.
