How low can you go?  :)  My UPC/EAN/UPC-E/EAN-8 with 2 and 5 digit
supplementals, forward and backward, was implemented in a 2343.

Yes, all true, I think barcode pen was the original query.
Shutting off it's LED would certainly help.
