No practical experience of this, but I'd hazard that it would certainly work in some cases and certainly fail in others. Wands which rely on physical movement of the wand wrt the target and laser scanners which take the action to the stationary target would seem to present somewhat different challenges. A LASER scanner should be able to be tested for operation by determining the san rate and then modulating an LED of about the right wavelength appropriately. Better still would be a device which you could time vary the reflectance of. Then instead of grossly time modulating the whole display with the pattern you could consider varying it in time sequence geographically across the "display" and before you know it you have a reflective LCD barcode display :-).
