That would be me, and generally speaking, no.
They work on reflectance. You'd have to set things up optically so
that the transmitted energy gets dumped somewhere, not returning to
the reader, and the led instead gets there.  For a contact based wand,
that's maybe possible.
With a laser scanner, the read optics are scanned along with the beam,
so I'd bet not.  Laser wands also usually have filters for wavelength,
but you might be able to source an LED that gets thru them.
