The J series parts (which afaict includes all pic24's though not the related dsPics has crappy flash endurance (forget about using program memory as long term data storage and be prepared to rework boards during prototyping), runs on 3.3V (which is good for power consumption but sometimes not so good in other ways) has IIRC far less output drive on most port pins.
