Hello Brooke, Check to see if the device was connected from line to neutral, if it was so connected, it used to be a transient suppressor (google "transorb"). If it was connected in series with the line, it used to be a positive temperature coefficient resistor used to limit current. More than likely, it was a transient suppressor. Do indeed look downstream in the circuit for other failed parts. I have seen these fail for no obvious reason, however.
