Thanks for the reply :) I can try that, probably tomorrow, I have the old supply that I replaced due to a noisy fan. But 2 items indicate against the theory of bad 5 volt and in the interest of keeping the message brief, I didn't mention: I have had a DMM on the ground to 5 volt pins, with voltage steady in the 4.97 volt to 5.00 volt range. When up and running in Windows which is most of the time 12 hours a day, the Intel active monitor is running which does monitor voltages and cooling temps. The alarm beeper is loud. There have been one second duration excursions for either the 3.3 or 5 volt supplies less than once a month. The computer has been very stable for several years.
