Since i have no SOIC - DIP adapter i tried to connect some wires from the chip. I put a connector, i tied CS pin to PORTB0. I am opening the SPI using the folowing command : OpenSPI(SPI_FOSC_4, MODE_00, SMPEND); These are the values for the most important registers before i am trying to read the status form the dataflash : TRISB: 0xFE TRISC: 0x97 SSPCON1: 0x20 SSPSTAT: 0xC0 SSPBUF: 0xFF This is the code i am using to read the status from the chip : LATBbits.LATB0 = 0; spi_tmp = putcSPI(0x57); spi_tmp = getcSPI(); LATBbits.LATB0 = 1; After this spi_tmp holds a 0. I tried a lot of other variants of setting the SPI module but the end result is always the same : 0 The 0x57 value is STATUS READ command as written in datasheet. >From the datasheet i saw that STATUS bits 2-5 indicate the device density and should be 0111 for the chip i am using. I am going a bit crazy with this since i tried almost everything except watching the comm using a scope but in the end i will do this also. I wrote about this problem to the list because i am hoping there is some magic thing i am forgetting during setup or reading/writing to SPI and should unlock my mistery. I attached the connection i am using for the chip, i should also add i use 4.5v to power my circuit and ~3.2v (using a resistor circuit) to power the dataflash.
