Linux compressed image is the same, just bootloader must know what to do with it. For bootloader usually syslinux is used, because people like to leave fat filesystem on usb stick; I like ext2/ext3 better, for which there is extlinux bootloader from the same (syslinux) package. Much better is ordinary GRUB which can work with any type of filesystem.
