SIM access profile can also read SMS but only the ones saved on the SIM. 
New phones store the new received SMS messages on the phone.  And SIM 
access profile is not trivial. It uses the same communication protocol 
of phone to SIM but via bluetooth.  I don't know if Tomtom supports this.
