Id suggest you Kubuntu - www.kubuntu.org (Ubuntu with KDE (a desktop manager - www.kde.org). Ubuntu comes with GNOME (a different desktop manager)) and both have a big users base, forums, etc. Mandriva 2007 (about to sing the swan song in terms of upgrades availability) and 2008 are nice distributions for beginners too. www.mandriva.com To install the current version of Kubuntu (just released 7.10) you need at least 512 Mb of ram. You can download the live CD in ISO format for both distributions (doesnt need installation but it will run slowly if you're short on ram) and get a taste of it. If you decide to install it on your hard disk you can do it from the same cd and you can even keep your actual OS, given that you have enough room on your hard disk (a 15 Gb partition would be enough for a looong time and it can be even smaller since nowadays you can *reliably* have read and write access to NTFS partitions from linux), without major hassles. Regarding the Desktop Managers, you can think of KDE as windows looking alike and of Gnome as mac looking alike. KDE includes a set of applications developed for the enviroment anmd tends to favour them while Gnome integrates popular applications to the enviroment. Of course you can integrate popular applications into KDE as well.KDE actual version is 3.58 and a new release (4.0) is going to be officially released on jan the 17th.
