Andre, Ubuntu certainly seems to be the most popular these days, so that might be a good starting point. Fedora is also well-known as a fairly useable distribution. Mainly, it depends on what you're trying to do. If you really want to dive in, something like gentoo or slackware will let you get your hands dirty right away, but it will be rather daunting. One option, if you have a fast internet connection, is to download a whole bunch of LiveCD images (distrowatch.org will help you find them) and try them all. They will mostly look the same, though. To sum it up, I would go with Ubuntu, unless you want to really get into it, in which case, give gentoo a try (be sure to follow the documentation).
