[I promised some people this link, then couldn't find it. Today I stumbled over it, 2 weeks late]. DIY Electronics sold (and still sells) programmers for PICs. These are cute and work very well, but because of space constraints cannot be upgraded to newer PICs. There has been NO update since Tony Nixon, the original designer, resigned from the electronics game in 2005. The link below is for replacement firmware for DIY programmers that handles almost EVERY PIC that Microchip makes; this is an awesome achievement by some very clever PIC guys in Germany.
