Bob.....I can relate to your frustrations.  I only hope you can get to the bottom of it soon, and when you do, let us know the results.   I can't offer any other suggestions that havent been posted.  If it was me, I would get a new drive, drop it in and put a clean XP on it, MPLAB and then try it out.  Best of luck.
