You folks got me to thinking (a good thing) and I have gotten near to where
I want to be.  The comment about the #button and the ASCII representation
made me dig into some books a friend has and I found an example in one that
is pretty close to what I want to accomplish.  The whole issue does revolve
around WHAT is being sent.  I have this close to figured out and should have
it completely solved shortly.

Button = 31

Serout PORTC.6, 2400, "Button # ", #button, CrLf  'send button pushed value

generates on the screen:

Button # 0
