When I've been an IEEE or ACM member, I've found their focus to be overly "academic" compared to my interests. More about the state of university research than actual real "stuff, and I've been happier with the (free!) trade publications like EETimes, EDN, and so on. (However, the 2000 bubble burst was not kind to the technical publication business, and things seem to have changed somewhat for the worse in the trade pubs...)
