Something electronic with very little visible value probably won't get stolen, but might well get vandalized. A few thoughts: make it ugly and hang it high. If it looks old and battered, it won't attract attention, and if it's more than 7-8 feet off the ground (and there are no reasonably close objects to be stood upon or dragged over and stood upon) it probably won't be bothered. What sort of device is it? Can the entire thing be enclosed in a standard gray outdoor enclosure (like a circuit breaker panel)? Or does it need an antenna or a window? Will it blink or make noise or otherwise attract attention?
