Indeed my father, who is a farmer in Portugal, is feeling the effects of this, last time I was there he was telling me how the price of the feed for is animals had gone higher do to the demand for fuel production. What you guys fail to see in my opinion is that this so bad way we live, is the same that supports the level of life that we have, that lets us even have time to think about saving the environment. So wishing that the price of oil goes up to force change to happen, is the same as to wish that a lot of people go out of business, and that the world economy just goes into meltdown. In those circumstances I bet the last thing on anybody's minds will be the environment. It won't just be wasteful Americans with SUVs who end up suffering if (when) that happens. There are already people concerned about the social outcomes of surplus corn (or perhaps not so surplus) getting turned into ethanol for fuel instead of feeding people who are hungry.
