The AC series have strong outputs. I even used 74AC04 in power conversion and direct very small motor commutation! The CMOS4000 series is good to handle larger voltage swings. -and also include some nice MUX (4051,2,3, PLL 4046, 4060 osc+counter, 4017 1 of 10 counter (used heavily as program counter in my first designs before microcontroller...) Thera are also CMOS verisons for lower voltage stronger drive and higher speed of the most popular such as those mentionned.
