We have a specific version of linux that IS supported, but it's considered part of the "engineering unix environment" rather than part of the "desktop application environment." (so, for instance, your linux system is supposed to be essentially dataless, with personal files and things like build results off in network-attached-storage, and it doesn't support "applications" so much as it supports "development environments.") For quite some time, Macs were unable to attach via wireless, because the "standard" selected for wireless authentication wasn't supported on Macs. Mac users (which includes some senior VPs, multiple PhD-carrying "fellows" and so on) were annoyed. (it's all better than daytime television!)
