I found the problem...

The Data sheet on the Parallel Slave Port makes mention of the Interference
of the ECCP1, and the A/D, BUT it makes no mention of the COMPARITOR module,
which on power up DISABLE (PSP) PORTD bits 0:3.

Sigh!
