Um.  Did they install any special security software?  We have
enough "nanny-ware" on our work computers to be annoying almost
all of the time.  While it's rare for this software to SILENTLY
interfere with normal operation of software, there have been a
couple of instances where some standard program managed to end
up on a "non-trusted program" list and was (silently!) prevented
from running.

Software for manipulating device programmers and such is far
outside the normal scope of "IT department" awareness, and it
would not surprise me at all if standard nanny-ware were to
prevent things like the "direct port access" drivers from
installing or running or working, nor for the microchip SW
to require something like that even for a USB-based device.
