What version of MPLAB are you using? The pain of the neck for ICD2 is: downloading OS for different PICs. This type of design screw up things a lot. I used to use ICD2, now I switch to PICkit2. Since, at this moment, it doesn't require the annoying OS downloading thing when I use different CAN chips. However, After I put MPLAB V8.00 to my computer, I saw many hex files on the PICKit2 folder just as I saw on the ICD2 folders before. This makes me keep thinking: oh my god, Is Microchip, again, planning doing the same thing (on ICD2) for PICkit2? (or in the near future?): change a PIC will, again, need a new "OS"? Too bad. Though We have no control, but Hope that day will never come. With so many ICD2 exchange with Microchip, I found each one I got had some hardware changes. And each one get a little trick to play. This last one I got couple of month ago (a PIC18F4550 version), to make it working, I have to power up the target board first, otherwise, it will never work. This doesn't happen for previous ICD2s. Other than that, everything works fine except the same "os downloading" staff when I change PICs. Funny N. However Installing mplab went ok BUT can't find target device running self-test some times it passes and sometimes it does not. 2nd computer with microchip's icd-2 works fine with same board under test.
