Stated was this would be a one off project, and he/she was looking for a low component count solution. a 8 pin pic has many advantages no timing cap needed, no need for a cap in the input to avoid retriggering by a continuous low or high signal and very good timing accuracy Other things that mightcome up later can be implemented also such as a power up delay.
