Remember the olden days as an alternative to jumpers you would see pairs of pads meant to be joined by solder? They would be triangular or half-circles so the solder would naturally want to bridge over. So perhaps that idea could be worked into this one, where a "pad" was actually a multidirectional grouping of semicircles joined at the center by thin traces. Say in four (or six if you're from honeybee stock) directions. Or if you had the luxury of a soldermask layer you could just do a clever pattern for the mask that might push the solder towards the edge because of the shape.
