Why would a hobbyist want to bother with lead-free solder?

The stuff with 3% silver is reasonable to work with, as long as the iron is hot enough, but it
really eats up the plating on tips, doesn't flow as well, is a total PITA to unsolder from plated
through-holes and the higher temperatures mean that any rework is more likely to damage the PCB.
