You just need to download the codecs in a package and put them in the correct place. If you use Ubuntu/Gnome, you just need to use totem-xine instead of totem-gstreamer and it will work fine. RealPlayer works under Linux (not as good as Windows though but I use Real Alternative under Windows to avoid the bloated Real Player under Windows). There are others options under Linux but I think mplayer is rather the easiest solution.
