It seems to me Ubuntu is a bit "too easy" to use now so I am trying some other OS these days. One is Arch Linux and FreeBSD. I just finished the updating of FreeBSD and Arch Linux over the weekend. FreeBSD updating process is a dismay experience with CVSUP. During the process, I had to remove almost everything, including X since I ran into problems with HAL and Pango. Still I could not even get X because of HAL. I had to use binary packages to finally update the system. It took many hours to update the system from 6.2 Stable to 7.0 Current ((still got quite some packages outdated) and I do not have many packages (initially only XFCE and partial KDE) installed as compared to Arch (rather full Gnome+KDE installation). On the contrary, I used about 1.5 hours to update Arch Linux, including download of 994.5MB of updates from Australia mirror (ftp://mirror.pacific.net.au). The only problem is that I need to remove apmd (from Google). It seems to me that FreeBSD has a long way to go to catch up with Linux in terms of easy of use in the Desktop. So FreeBSD is only for me to test some PIC related things now.
