Go figure. That is the daily problem you need to deal with when you started with a not-so-proper programmer. If you enjoy this kind of learning process, that is actually good for you. If you want to learn more about PIC, perhaps you should seriously consider a proper programmer like PICkit 2. It is well supported under Windows and Linux. It is not that expensive at US$35.
