We use 78L05 today, the version with elongated TO92 body, mounted with short pins to large copper areas. Works perfectly, but: In near future the system will be loaded with more extra stuff, so to avoid changing the main power supply it will probably be cheaper to halve the consumption of my board. "Changing main supply" would be expensive as it is now integrated "no cost" in another device. Clarification: the load will *vary* dynamically about between 10 to 70mA, mainly as display LEDs go on and off. I will check the suggested chips.
