Since my device is self-powered, it reports to the host that no power is
required. If my device is the only device on the bus, the host has no reason
to provide power on the 5V supply. Is there any chance that the host will
then drop the 5V supply?

Maybe the answer is that I should report some power usage. Of course, if I
use a pull-down, I will be consuming power from that supply.
