I wasn't able to find a .deb for the library, so yes, I was installing from source, which resulted in the dependancy hell. Now that I know WHAT I need I'd be able to redo it very quickly, it's finding out WHAT packages one needs (and what those packages need, and what those need, and so on) that is the REAL fun! :) FWIW it was easier under Fedora since when I install with Fedora I just tell it to install everything, reducing the chance of not having a package needed.
