For small compiler vendors, it is not easy to do copyright protection other than resort to hardware dongle or locking to IP address. Without copyright protection, the vendors may suffer loss of revenue due to missue of the software. I am not so sure if there are good answers to software copyright protection methods for ptofssional software with relative few customers. When I bought PICC 7.85, therre was no dongle and key disk. But now we have dongles for IAR C compiler for ARM. And our Keil C51 Compiler licenses are locked to IP addresses (they allow one desktop and one laptop for one license since the developer will use both).
