I'm using HiTech PICC compilers since a long time ago. When I made the choice, they and CCS were the only serious contenders IIRC. I started with CCS, but I didn't like the fact that they had to publish a bug fix update about every week. (And, from that recent discussion here, it seems that it's still like this. Man... :) I mean, if you look at it from the viewpoint of in one year, you're currently working with a compiler that still has to receive some 50 serious bug fixes. I had to find the one or other bug in PICC also, but that's probably normal, and every time I found one it got fixed almost immediately. I don't do a lot of work with MPLAB, so can't say how well the integration works. Regarding libraries, that's a bit like ECAD libs: in the end, you probably make your own anyway, at least in a production environment (as opposed to a hobbyist environment). Don't have any performance comparison data with other compilers.
