For what it's worth I'm currently writing GPLed embedded software for a major company. It doesn't seem to bother them too much that they'll have to release my kernel code as open source - they know they're getting the benefit of a free OS (linux) as part of the bargain. To businesses it's all about the cost/benefit. The benefit in this case is large so the hard-to-define cost of releasing the code is quite acceptable. Since we're really selling hardware the core business isn't affected in any case.
