I recently did a project where the device was VERY cost sensitive and had to be powered off an automotive supply. After looking at various alternatives, I put in a 5V zener and a couple series resistors. Also, a pretty large capacitor across the zener. That provides reverse battery protection, load dump protection, etc. at a pretty low cost.
