I know you're a great fan of the PICkit2 - have you tried the clone version? I have one, and it seems to be a good clone except that it won't vary the Vdd output voltage - it sits at the level supplied by the USB port (4.75V in the case I tested) regardless of the setting in the software. I don't know if this is a fault with this particular unit, or a design economy!
