Probably.  One of the things I noticed was that there are some
less popular chips that were still around at bargain prices.  I
spent some time looking for a 40-pin 18F chip in DIP, for instance,
and ended up buying 18F448s, which are nominally special purpose
chips for CAN applications.  After checking the datasheet to confirm
that the CAN functionality didn't used dedicated pins, I decided
that the 448 would work just fine as a general purpose chip, especially
at $1.84 each. :-)
