Now YOU can own an OLPC ("One Laptop Per Child") laptop, despite the fact that they are not intended for sale to the general public, by paying $US400 to have one OLPC computer sent to a 3rd world child and getting one for yourself. This arrangement is intended to only operate from November 12th to November 26th http://www.olpcnews.com/countries/usa/olpc_xo_laptop_sale.html http://computerworld.co.nz/news.nsf/news/BCA483322DD91DADCC2573600016BCBB?opendocument&utm_source=topnews&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=topnews Initial production of a run of 40,000 units is scheduled for October with availability to end users due in early November. My personal thought is that, based on past happenings in all sorts of areas, I would not be at all surprised if this target slips 'somewhat". It's a commendable project but suffers, not expectedly, from the normal price projection bloat and release date creep of many other products. Asustek is aiming to sell a $US199 laptop this year as part of a series priced at notionally 199 249 299 399 & $US549. The bottom priced one is rather close to the OLPC's current $190 expected launch price. The OLPC is liable to be far less "conventional" which would be both an attraction and a disadvantage for more mainstream use. http://computerworld.co.nz/news.nsf/news/6C84243B4BFA3B05CC2572C0001AF8D6 OLPC Pacific initiative. Their promo material doesn't seem to have yet caught up with the almost 2;1 price rise since first proposals. http://computerworld.co.nz/news.nsf/news/E863C047F225298FCC257339007321B6 In November 2006 Brazil were said to be the 1st OLPC target http://computerworld.co.nz/news.nsf/news/704B43685F54E8CBCC25721F00351B05 And in November 200 rollout date was hoped to be 1Q07 http://computerworld.co.nz/news.nsf/news/B6DDFDFFD219DDAACC2572190037B132 And now it's November 12th 2007.
