In fact, I found the press conference (on CNN: http://tinyurl.com/2dsout or http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2007/09/21/ sot.ma.airport.bomb.hoax.whdh ) to be rather ... mild and reasonable, in terms of not "demonizing" student in question. A sort of "we were suspicious and acted accordingly. We were wrong and we'll be really pissed off if we were intentionally fooled." I mean, they even managed to figure out that the shirt was NOT dangerous without having EOD "detonating" it. Clearly at some point SOMEONE recognized it for what it was. (and the CNN video has pictures, so all us EE types can laugh while the normal folk go "yes, that does look suspicious."
