My immediate reaction to Russell's request was that some of the bottom end 
PICs would fit, but then figured he was looking for something about half the 
price.

Russell, have you had a look at the ST7 series I posted a link to recently? 
Don't know what the prices are, but IIRC some of the small ones there would 
fit the I/O requirements, and may be worth enquiring about price.
