A gyro references angle measurement to an X, Y, Z axis of the earth. An 
accelerometer measures how quickly your speed is changing and measured 
in feet/second/second (in USA units). When you push the go pedal on your 
car, the amount you sink back into the seat would be an elementary 
accelerometer.
