One more note: for anyone actually looking to make an ASIC, check out: http://www.mosis.com/ They have special pricing for academic and non-commercial customers. I've never used them but I worked out about 5 years ago that to have a small IC made in their cheapest process (1 or 2 micron I think) such as an op-amp, would be about $500 US for non-commercial customers. I'm sure it goes up dramatically for something the size of a processor.
