What "sort of thing" is that? Some reporter reporting what he/she doesn't

Apparently the origin of "this sort of thing" is here:

there is little if any connection between this document and the article
from The Register. As they say, their "German is rubbish", and so is the
article :)

I guess reading is on the decline, also among journalists, and
understanding what they read or write about has always been optional.
