I got tired of zillions of COM ports being created when i need to 
program some FT232 chips. Safe mode and all the other tricks didn't 
work. I finally re installed XP. and even that hasn't 100% cured it, 
which seems quite odd. next step is going to be wiping the partition.

I can program the devices on the Mac now, so I'm not going to mess 
with this on the windoze box again, assuming I can even get it back 
to a stable (relative to windows) operating condition.
