Ah yes, I'd forgotten about that little drawback of the ThinkPad T23 - it only has USB 1.1, and for external drives that's horribly slow (people tend not to believe that USB2 really is 40 times faster, so that a one minute job on USB2 takes three quarters of an hour on USB1.1!). You can get USB2 cards for the CardBus slots of course, but it's much less convenient as they always have a lump sticking out of the side of the machine.
