What makes Zilogs Inferior to PICs.. or vice > versa??... Never used a Zilogs other than the learning of Z80 long long ago. Anyway, I guess that Zilogs are apparently inferior for PICs if using for education purpose. There are so many PIC related projects on the web not. There are much less for Zilogs. Microchip forum is also much better for students who ask for help. Microchip C18 and C30 student versions are free. Last time I met Zilog Singapre guys and their distributor (AVnet) and I think they were ok. However I kind of wrote Zilog off as a viable supply long time ago when I was investigating the 8-bit MCUs in year 1999. At that time, I also wrote off Atmel, National Semi, Motorola SPS (now FreeScale) due to either technical reasons or poor response to my 100kpcs/year enquiry. I chose Microchip at the time with NEC being the 2nd option. the choice of Microchip proved to be a good one.
