As a replacement for acrobat reader: (copied from a mesage to my daughters)
And an issue I had last week. Kept seeing the hourglass on the screen, 
where I was doing very little like playing freecell. Went to task 
manager: CTL-ALT-DEL > taskmanager > processes > sort alpha the image 
name. If you have an item "adobeupdater.exe", it's likely to be the CPU 
hog. Suggest loading Foxit reader: 
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php (all free)

you also should install:add-ons (from left menu bar)
PEG2000/JBIG Decoder
GDI+ Module
JavaScript Support

set as default PDF viewer, and then delete  the adobe reader.

This is all as a result of a recent reader update that you might have 
installed, if you haven't, don't upgrade, but the foxit seems to run 
faster and seems OK.
