I do not think this is a new idea. Back in 2004, in my previous job,
we weree thinking of using the optical mouse sensor in the photoelectric
sensors since it has a poweful DSP inside which can do kind of
signal processing. We were thinking we might be able to change
the optics and use it in the product. The conclusion was that it
was not worth the time and efforts since they are too speciallized
to be used in other applications.
